Longish.
Our new niece was born this morning, at 6:10 am. Zoe Olivia. Neat, huh? In a family where the men always outnumbered the women, my sister finally has her revenge. We're really excited to meet her. * * * Big thanks to zeWife's dad, who brought me the Mexican wrestler mask I'd been yearning for. It's a perfect fit. Now...to fight crime... * * * So I think I'm going to vote this election. I downloaded a copy of the ballot and I'm doing my research. It's been exactly 10 years since the last time I voted; its kind of a 50-50 split between being lazy and being indignant. You read enough and eventually every candidate starts to sound completely unworthy of your vote, and I hate the whole "choosing the lesser of two evils" argument that people try to make. Try choosing between one candidate that's corrupt and another that's incompetent, and see how that works out for you. But this election, this Texas governer's race, see, there's four candidates. FOUR. Even I can't Goldilocks my way out of this one. So I'm voting. And for who? Oh right, that. Well, that one you're voting for, I'm for one of the other three. * * * MY LAST COMIC EVER. I gave up comics about four months ago, but left the door slightly ajar for the arrival of SEVEN SOLDIERS #1, which was originally supposed to be published in April but found itself victim to a six month delay. Well, it finally arrived yesterday and with that purchase, my comic collecting has officially come to an end. What a great comic to end on, too. As I told zeWife this morning, I had to read it four times, check the Barbelith boards for notes, and read it three more times, just to understand what happend on PAGE ONE. Blew my mind. So yeah, monthly comics, done. Graphic novels? Eh...we'll see. * * * Longish post, I know, but even after shutting down one blog, it doesn't seem likely that I'll be keeping up with this one much either once my new job begins. Also, I want to get one post-Kinko's writeup done before I leave, which will probably happen tomorrow. Probably.
Fall Festival.
So had this idea on Saturday for a Threadless shirt, but I pretty much knew someone would have already had it. Yep. Back to the drawing board. Also on Saturday, we had a fall festival invade our home. It was a lot of fun, lots of great food and drink. Our pals Annabel and Shirley went nuts and made our place look and smell great. After the grub and some pumpkin carving we sat out on the patio and watched a thoroughly inappropriate version of Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone on a projected screen. Thanks to all who came. Same time next year?
Happy Birthday zeWife!
My wife and I love the rain, the only downside being that squirrels snails like to come and visit when its wet outside. Don't get me wrong, squirrels snails are cool -- they come in from the back patio and zeWife names them and helps them back outside. The only problem is that outside, in dark of the early morning, you can't see them and you never know if the crunch under your shoes are acorns or tiny squirrels snails. zeWife, Protector of Squirrels Snails, walks extra slowly to the car every morning to protect our little friends. So on behalf of myself and the tiny slimy creatures of the world, happy birthday and thanks for watching out for us. We love you!
Goodness.
So this morning, zeWife was singing a song that goes, "Cottage cheese / Loves you and me", and I thought, hey, that'd make a great MS PAINT FRIDAY entry, but man...I don't know how to draw cottage cheese... Anyway, I accepted a new position with a new company yesterday. Pretty exciting. I've actually been applying for this same job since February, so it's a pretty good feeling to finally be made an offer. It'll be my first job in six years not in retail, which feels GREAT. There's a lot more room for growth in this position, while in my current place of employment I'd pretty much gotten as far as I wanted to. So yeah. That's my news. zeWife is thrilled, I'm thrilled. Things are good. Here's a picture of a content looking dude with some cottage cheese:
Mexico, Sweet Mexico
My folks just came back from a trip to Ciudad Juarez. Along with the marzipan candies and watermelons they always bring back, my mom found herself buying a huge wheel of Mennonite cheese. A great deal, but as my dad lugged it around the marketplace, an old Mexican lady told my parents that U.S. Immigration only lets you bring five kilograms of cheese back into the states with you. Of course, she offered to keep some of their cheese with her so they could make a few trips. zePadre, sensing a ruse, told her they'd prefer to take their chances. So here's my folks, smuggling 15 kilos of pure Queso Menonitas across the Mexican border. Successfully, I should add. So now we got a ton of cheese in our fridge. In other news, zeWife's mom is also in Mexico this week, searching probably in vain for a Mexican wrestler mask to buy for me. I know with Nacho Libre and all I should be able to find one here at Walgreens or something, but I want authenticity. My sister's search for one this summer came up short. I guess I should be happy with the new iPod and my tattoo sleeves. I'm just greedy I guess.
You Dirty Rat
So I woke up early on Sunday to catch the 10:30am showing of The Departed with zeWife's dad. Man, it was great. It's not Best Picture worthy, but it's definitely Best Director worthy. (and Best Screenplay worthy, and Best Editing worthy...) There's the whole cop-pretending-to-be-a-crook deal, and the crook-pretending-to-be-a-cop deal, and I really expected there to be a whole lot of shades of gray, shifting & uncertain loyalties, the two characters becoming more and more alike until you couldn't tell them apart, but it really wasn't like that at all. You pretty much know from the beginning that one of them was a good guy, and the other one is a huge evil bastard. I liked that. I think it would have been more cliche to do it the other way, and it was a lot more fun to see them actually be at odds and the situations that play out of that. And I don't usually single out favorite performances, but Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg were dead-on hilarious and perfect. So I get home and we finish watching the second season of Teen Titans, you know, the one where Terra turns out to be a mole that hands the team over to their worst enemy, so I turns to zeWife and I says, "Don't ever betray me, please." There just seems to be a lot of that going around these days.
